Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) was hospitalized in Washington to receive treatment for an infection, his office announced Tuesday night in a brief statement. The eight-term senator, who is receiving antibiotic infusions, “is in good spirits and will return to work as soon as possible following doctors’ orders,” the statement said.
Clare Slattery, Grassley’s press secretary, said in an email Tuesday evening that he was expected to make a full recovery.
At 90, Grassley is the oldest member of the Senate, according to a report this month from the Congressional Research Service. Last year, Grassley underwent surgery to repair a fractured hip and returned to the Senate a few weeks later aided by a wheelchair.
Grassley served three terms in the House of Representatives before he was elected to the Senate in 1980. He was reelected to his current term in 2022.
After the announcement from Grassley’s office, some lawmakers took to social media to extend their good wishes.
“I look forward to seeing him back on the Senate floor very soon,” Sen. Katie Boyd Britt (R-Ala.) wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Please join Wesley and me in praying for a speedy recovery for Senator @ChuckGrassley. I look forward to seeing him back on the Senate floor very soon.
